ROOTS PICNIC 2018
Nothing could have prepared me for my first music festival. It has to be something you experience and then return with a game plan. To top it all off, there was suppose to be rain. Nothing was going to stop the fun so that meant grabbing some ponchos.
If you are going with others, you may want to game plan who wants to see who and when and at what stage. With shows overlapping it could be a challenge getting a good spot to view the show.
We missed…
- 6lack
- Grits and Biscuits
- Lil Uzi chasing Rich The Kid through the Philly streets
Please eat before arriving. Spent forever in a food truck line and they didn’t have french fries. Which should be on all food trucks btw. The festival did allow for a bottled water and snacks. Do that.
Have your extra battery pack to charge your phone and don’t expect your data plan to hold you down with so many people in one spot. And should they cancel due to weather, expect the Uber/Lyft prices to sky-rocket. (this happened)
The whole atmosphere was a chill vibe with everyone ready to enjoy their favorite artists or podcasts.
I didn’t know what to expect from DJ Dramas “Gangsta Grillz” set but then T.I. came out performing hits from my prime.
Skipped over to another stage to catch Dipset. Did not have a good spot. Annnnnnnd the sound was off but still caught a glimpse of Cameron and couldn’t make out anybody else. Rumor was only Cameron was there but I saw Jim on some IG posts.
I will say I had zero interest in Lil Uzi Vert when I first heard of him. I believe there is a video of him refusing to freestyle on Hot 97. It was appalling. How dare this mumble rapper disrespect these classic beats!??! But… this lil’ dude puts on a show. I just know some hooks but the crowd sang everything. Vert also loves being in the crowd.
The rain held off until the finale. Dave came out to introduce the Roots and even with no jokes… IT WAS LIT!!
Roots got into a grove and Black Thought blessed us with superior rhymes to cleanse us of all the mumbling rap we’ve ever heard. At this time, I could only listen because the heavens decided to pour down upon us. I think 2 Chains was ready to start his set when the show was shut down. The girls behind me were chanting for Dave to come back out. My people and I joined in. They once announced the show would resume in 10-15 mins but ultimately shut down and told be to get to safety. I’m calculating how much of my ticket I want to be refunded.
Overall, it was a good time. I suggest everyone does a music festival at least once.
