Memorial Day in Rochester
Today We Honor The Fallen
Today was perfect for catching a parade, firing up the grill or being outside in general. Most of us look forward to the long weekend from work and some are catching a Memorial Day Sale. Let’s not forget, though, that today is about those who have given their lives for our freedom.
There are many claims as to where the first “Memorial Day” took place. There is one that stands out in history and is one of the earliest accounts. On May 5th, 1865, former slaves of Charleston, SC gave soldiers a proper burial and the community participated in a parade of sorts. These soldiers were left behind in a race track turned outside prison. Read more about it here -> https://t.co/ytHP8z4zJK

Had the chance to go down memory lane at the Rochester parade today. Gates-Chili’s large marching band brought life to the crowd. I was happy to hear the same street beat from when I marched with them, a couple score years ago or so.
As GC marched by, I leaned over to my daughters and said, “This is my school, I use to march with them.” A few seconds later, ” I marched in this parade twice one year with 2 different marching bands.” Again, “Did yall hear me say I marched in this parade before?” The children may or may not have had the look of annoyance on their faces. I didn’t make eye contact.
Because of those who have given their lives, we enjoyed a parade, a peaceful playground, Russel’s ice cream and now looking to crash a BBQ.
No matter how you are spending your holiday, be safe today and never forget what Memorial Day is all about.
