Ikea Responds to Balenciaga’s Version of Its 99-Cent Bag | V Magazine
The internet had a frenzy after IKEA released a whimsical response to Balenciaga’s copy of its classic, oversized 99-cent tote—if you’ve ever dared to venture into the mega-maze of home furnishing, you know the one. The French fashion house’s rendition of the tote is an almost exact copy, but in leather, and comes at a whopping $2,145 price tag.
With the help of their agency partner, ACNE (not to be confused with the fashion brand), Ikea’s response was a print ad explaining how to identify the original FRATKA bag from Balenciaga’s version. The ad reads, “1) SHAKE IT. If it rustles, it’s the real deal. 2) MULTIFUNCTIONAL. It can carry hockey gear, bricks, and even water. 3) THROW IT IN THE DIRT. A true FRAKTA is simply rinsed off with a garden hose when dirty. 4) PRICE TAG. Only $0.99.”
“I wanted to act fast, so we contacted our client the day after and I said, ‘We’ll have creative work ready within two hours,” said Johan Holgrem, ACNE Creative Director, to Creativity. The copy by Balenciaga is the most greatest form of flattery, the move was “unexpected and brilliant” said Holgrem, “I like the flirt, and I thought, ‘Why not flirt back?’ And we did.”
Need help distinguishing the two? IKEA’s got your back.
