Solange’s ‘A Seat at the Table’ Has Inspired a New Course Syllabus | V Magazine
May everyone take a seat at the table? Class is about to begin.
Solange’s standout album A Seat At the Table was a powerful meditation on what it means to be a woman of color in the modern world. Simply listening to the record is an essential learning experience in itself, but now it will serve as the inspiration for a true course syllabus.
Titled A Seat At the Table Syllabus: The Truths of Young Women of Color, the syllabus will consist of texts, music, and visual art that makes a statement about young women of color or expands on their different experiences. It will be curated by writer and professor Melissa Harris-Perry, students of Wake Forest University, and “scholars who will examine resisting racism, understanding gender and sexuality, and the role of relationships and nurturing ourselves.”
All young women of color, ages 16-30, are invited to submit works to be considered for the syllabus, giving them a seat at the table in the most authentic manner possible. It will be divided into five distinct sections, each focusing on a different aspect of women of color’s experiences— Resisting Racism, Understanding Gender and Sexuality, the Role of Relationships, Nurturing Ourselves, and A Seat at the Lunch Table. There is no word yet on whether a university will actually teach the course, but please enroll us at the institution that eventually picks this up.
Submissions will be accepted until Tuesday, January 31 at the project’s website.
